Our Story

The Signal Noise was founded in 2016 by a small group of tech writers who were frustrated by how much online media had turned into clickbait and noise. We started as a weekend side project — a simple blog where we could cut through the hype and write honestly about technology, culture, and the ideas shaping how people live and work. What began as a passion project quickly grew into a destination for readers who wanted clarity instead of clutter.

Who We Are

The Signal Noise is owned and operated by co-founders Maya Ellison and David Cho, two former tech journalists who met while working at a mid-sized digital publication. After years of writing for outlets driven by pageviews rather than substance, they decided to build something different: a site where quality reporting and thoughtful analysis came first. Today, they continue to lead the editorial direction of the site, working closely with a growing team of writers and contributors.

What We Cover

The Signal Noise covers the intersection of technology, culture, and everyday life. Our core coverage areas include:

  • Emerging technology and gadget reviews
  • Digital culture, internet trends, and online communities
  • Productivity, remote work, and the future of how we work
  • Media literacy and the changing information landscape
  • Occasional deep dives into topics our readers are curious about

We aim to be the “signal” in a media landscape full of “noise” — delivering content that’s useful, well-researched, and worth your time.

Our Team

Our team is made up of writers, editors, and researchers from a variety of backgrounds, including journalism, computer science, and design. In addition to our co-founders, our core team includes:

  • Priya Nair — Managing Editor, overseeing daily content and editorial standards
  • Jordan Blake — Senior Technology Writer, focused on hardware and emerging tech
  • Sofia Ramirez — Culture & Trends Editor, covering internet and digital culture
  • Tom Whitfield — Head of Research, fact-checking and data-driven reporting

We also work with a rotating group of freelance contributors who bring specialized expertise to specific stories and topics.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to help readers separate the signal from the noise. In a world of endless information, we’re committed to publishing content that is accurate, useful, and genuinely interesting — without the sensationalism.
